    Kennesaw State, DeKalb Schools partner for pipeline of highly trained educators

    Through a new partnership with Kennesaw State University, a group of DeKalb County educators will receive specialized training and earn a master’s degree to assist with their district’s student needs. The Inspiring Greatness and Normalizing Innovation in Teacher Education (IGNITE) Teacher Residency Program aims to bolster teacher retention and combat a shortage of educators, while providing them with no-cost professional development. DeKalb County Schools launched the program in January, but the new partnership with KSU will expand it to specifically address a need for special education teachers.

    When members of a student organization at Kennesaw State University were looking for a way to give back to the institution, they struck upon a rather unique opportunity to make a difference for years to come. The path laid out by the Interfraternity Council (IFC) was to create two endowed scholarships to benefit those in student organizations on campus. The scholarships are the first at KSU established by students for students.

    Sometimes, Sarah Chang’s days started at 8 a.m. with a class and a lecture in the College of Science and Mathematics and ended at 11 p.m. with the sounds of her violin in a practice room at the Dr. Bobbie Bailey School of Music. Chang admitted at times the long days wore on her, but she has achieved the goal of her self-designed academic journey—bachelor’s degrees in biology and music performance from Kennesaw State University.

The unveiling took place during the second annual Hornets Homecoming, an event hosted by the Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) Alumni Society honoring those who graduated from Southern Polytechnic State University.

    Anytime she’s wanted something in her life, Kim Amaya has worked to earn it with little help. The soon-to-be Kennesaw State University graduate arrived in the United States from El Salvador when she was only 3, and since a tender age, she’s been working to afford herself opportunities her parents didn’t get. Since transferring to KSU in 2022 to study modern language and culture, Amaya has continued to work a full-time job and a part-time job, or up to three part-time, as she looks forward to a teaching career.

    This month, Mfon Okpok and Mahdiyeh Soltaninejad become the first two people to earn a doctorate in interdisciplinary engineering from Kennesaw State University’s Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. The Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering degree program was launched in the fall of 2021.
